Project Southeast Asia is excited to bring our Southeast Asian Studies Symposium – the world’s largest annual Southeast Asian studies conference – to the new, state of the art Indonesian Medical Education and Research Institute Tower in the heart of Jakarta.
The new state of the art tower was inaugurated by Vice-President Jusuf Kalla on 13 April 2017. Its design cleverly integrates the new, state of the art tower into the historic Faculty of Medicine building. This building, which dates from 1920, originally housed the school to train medical doctors, named STOVIA (School tot Opleiding van Inlandsche Artsen), founded 1898. Many STOVIA graduates later played important roles in Indonesia’s national movement toward independence, as well in developing medical education in Indonesia. The Faculty of Medicine is the oldest of the founding faculties of Universitas Indonesia.
A historic crossroads of East and West, combining tradition and innovation, with a firm focus on addressing the problems most relevant to the people of Southeast Asia, in the heart of Southeast Asia’s most important city: there is no more appropriate building to host the Southeast Asian Studies Symposium.
